Linux Mint XFCE (Lightweight)
For genuinely underpowered hardware — old Pentium/Atom-class laptops, 2-4GB RAM, or tablets like an early Surface Go. The standard Cinnamon edition of Linux Mint will feel sluggish on this class of machine; the XFCE edition uses a much lighter desktop environment and stays responsive on the same hardware.
Install
Same process as the standard Linux Mint guide , with one change: download the XFCE edition ISO instead of Cinnamon, from the same linuxmint.com/download.php page.
Surface Go and Similar Tablets: One Extra Step
Early Surface Go models have genuinely flaky Wi-Fi and touchscreen support under the stock Linux kernel. Don’t fight it with the standard kernel — use the community linux-surface kernel project instead, which specifically targets Surface hardware and fixes both.
This isn’t needed for a generic old laptop — only for actual Surface-family devices.
Why XFCE Instead of Cinnamon
XFCE trades some visual polish for a much lighter footprint — less RAM and CPU used at idle, which matters directly on hardware this old. Combined with the linux-surface kernel where applicable, it addresses the two biggest practical problems on old/underpowered machines: raw performance and hardware compatibility.
